The Aroma ARC-900SB Cool-Touch 10-Cup Stainless-Steel Rice Cooker and Food Steamer is a hot new unit from renowned rice cooker maker Aroma. With a standard retail price of under $40, this multifunctional 10 cup rice cooker is both highly useful and affordable.

The great thing about this machine is that you can use the built-in tray to steam veggies or meats simultaneously as you cook rice. But despite having a lot of functions, a lot of them are automatic or one-touch functionality, so it's easy for tech dummies like me to use them. Some professional chefs or cooking hobbyists might not feel that they have enough control over the specifics of the functionality, but the average user will feel relieved that they can figure out how to use this Aroma rice cooker quickly.

The 10 cups capacity refers to ten cups of dried rice, which will equal 20 cups of cooked rice. So this isn't a tiny rice cooker. It should be a good size for feeding your whole famliy. You can use the Aroma ARC-900SB for cooking a variety of secondary dishes as well. These include easy-to-make chili, soup, beef stew, and plenty of others. And one of my favorite things about this cooker is that it is made of stainless steel that stays relatively cool so you don't fry your hands if you touch it without oven mits!

Taking into consideration the multi-functionality, fairly large capacity, and user-friendliness of the ARC-900SB 10-cup rice cooker, I would say that for $40 it is a very good value.

Chinese Chilli Prawns and Rice

My name is Jon C, and I am the office chef at dawjee.com. Due to health and safety regulations, the only cooking utensils we're permitted are a rice cooker, egg steamer and combination microwave oven (it can do grills and roasts). I try to use these tools to provide our staff with cheap healthy meals. Local dining establishments serve low quality, expensive food, that can have a noticeably negative impact on the afternoon performance of my staff.

This dish involves a delicious combination of chilli prawns and rice. Either raw or pre-cooked prawns can be used. Though raw prawns are better for absorbing flavour from the marinade.

I shall not list quantities in the ingredients list as I just take a guess and chuck things into the pot. Just use a sensible estimate and experiment until you have the balance of flavours that you require.

Ingredients

Prawn Marinade:

ginger

garlic

chilli (powder, flakes or fresh)

sesame oil

light soya sauce

For the rest:

rice

water

onion

mushrooms

sweetcorn

peas

Bouillon vegetable stock

spring onion

Instructions

Prawn Marinade

Chop the ginger, garlic and chilli (if fresh) finely. Mix this with the sesame oil, light soya sauce and ground black pepper.

Mix the prawns in the marinade and set aside in a fridge for a few hours. If I'm planning on serving lunch at 12pm, I'll normally prepare the beef at 9am.

Cooking

Rinse the rice in the rice cooker a few times, and fill with water until there's about a finger nail's breadth of water above the top of the rice.

Add about half a teaspoon of vegetable stock to the rice,

Chop the onion and mushrooms into small pieces.

Add all the vegetables (apart from the spring onion) to the rice.

Add the marinaded prawns to the rice.

Mix everything up.

Turn on the rice cooker start cooking.

Chop up the spring onion.

When the food is cooked (this normally takes about 30 minutes), turn off the rice cooker, add the chopped spring onion, and give it all another good stir.

Due to health and safety regulations, the only cooking utensils we're permitted are a rice cooker, egg steamer and combination microwave oven (it can do grills and roasts). I try to use these tools to provide our staff with cheap healthy meals. Local dining establishments serve low quality, expensive food, that can have a noticeably negative impact on the afternoon performance of my staff.

In this article I shall describe a Chinese beef recipe that I cooked a couple of weeks ago. The seasoned strips of beef provide a tasty source of protein. While the rice and vegetables complete the meal to make it healthy and balanced. It cost under £5 to feed 3 hungry workers. And one of them ate enough for two.

I shall not list quantities in the ingredients list as I just take a guess and chuck things into the pot. Just use a sensible estimate and experiment until you have the balance of flavours that you require.

Ingredients

For beef:

rump steak

ginger

garlic

sesame oil

light soya sauce

ground black pepper

Chinese 5 spice

For the rest:

rice

water

bean sprouts

mushrooms

bell pepper

Bouillon vegetable stock

chopped coriander

Instructions

Beef Marinade

Slice the beef into thin strips about 1 inch with.

Chop the ginger and garlic finely, and mix with the garlic, sesame oil, light soya sauce and ground black pepper to form a delicious marinade.

Mix the sliced beef with the marinade and set aside in a fridge for a few hours. If I'm planning on serving lunch at 12pm, I'll normally prepare the beef at 9am.

Cooking

Rinse the rice in the rice cooker a few times, and fill with water until there's about a finger nail's breadth of water above the top of the rice.

Add about half a teaspoon of vegetable stock to the rice,

Chop the mushrooms and bell pepper. I normally chop them into lumps between 0.5cm and 1.0cm in diameter.

Add all the chopped mushrooms, bell pepper and unchopped bean sprouts to the rice.

Add the marinaded beef to the rice.

Mix everything up.

Turn on the rice cooker start cooking.

When the food is cooked (this normally takes about 30 minutes), turn off the rice cooker, add the chopped coriander, and give it all another good mix.

Pasta can be one of my favourite foods. However, I only really enjoy it when it's lovingly home cooked, as it enables the food to be served the minute it's ready. And the quality of ingredients is easier to verify. Onions and garlic are essential. And mushrooms and bell peppers are excellent vegetables for balancing the meal, both in terms of flavour and nutrition.

This delicious pasta dish can be cooked using a rice cooker. It is suitable for people who do not have hobs at their disposal. For example, I use it in my office, where we only have a microwave and rice cooker.

The meal contains a lot of vegetables, and can therefore be view as healthy from that point of view. However, I like to add a block of cheese, which you may want to leave out. I also used minced beef to add protein. Though I'm trying to cut down on meat and may leave that out too in the future.

Ingredients

Fusilloni Pasta

Garlic

Onion

Basil

Oregano

Vegetable Stock

Olive Oil

Tomato

Mushrooms

Bell Pepper

Cooking Instructions

Take the minced beef out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you start cooking. Cold mince is harder to stir.

Add the pasta to the rice cooker. Some rice cookers come with a rubber pad to stop the pasta sticking to the bottom of the rice cooker. If you have one, use it, otherwise don't worry about it. Cover the pasta with cold water.

Finely chop the onion and garlic. I used 6 cloves of garlic, and 1.5 onions. Add them to the rice cooker.

Chop the mushrooms into quarters and the bell pepper into small 1cm squares. If you want a fine sauce, chop the vegetables into even smaller portions. Add these to the rice cooker.

Chop up the tomatoes. There is no need to remove the skins as they improve the texture of the final result. A tin of tomatos could be use instead or as well.

Season the mixture with salt and pepper. And add the oregano, basil and vegetable stock.

If using cheese, chop it unto 1cm cubes and add it to the mix.

Finally, add the minced beef.

Pour over a healthy amount of olive oil and mix up the food.

Turn on the rice cooker and let it all cook.

Potential Issues

There are a lot of ingredients in this recipe, and smaller rice cookers may not cope. If the rice cooker goes to "keep warm" mode too soon, and the food obviously isn't cooked yet, then take out half of the mixture and continue cooking the remaining half. The removed mixture can be cooked afterwards or saved for another day.

But it does make good rice of different varieties, and can also be used to boil vegetables. It has few functions, so it's very simple to use: press the start button and let it cook. When the rice is finished cooking, the cooking mode automatically shuts off. But here is where some customer complaints come in. The products specs suggest that this rice cooker goes automatically into warming mode, but it actually doesn't have a warming mode. It is basically a rice pot and that's it, so when it's finished cooking it could go cold if you don't make use of it right away. I personally don't like having to be very precise in my timing of when I start to make the rice, so for me this is a problem.

Another thing to remember is that is small and cooks up to 3 cups of dry rice (so maybe 6 or 7 cups of cooked rice). That's fine for a small family but not for larger gatherings.

It has a useful dome glass lid that keeps in heat and moisture, and its handles stay cool and safe for lifting. I like the handles because they are large, and they are hook handles so you can put your fingers through them for extra lifting security.

The parts are not dishwasher-safe, but that is to be expected from a rice cooker of this price range. But it is actually easy to handwash the inner pot since it is removeable and non-stick.

The rice produced by this cooker is good. And if you follow the included instructions, you are unlikely to experience burnt or sticky rice. The biggest problem with this unit is that some white frothy bubbles spill out through the lid while you're cooking, so you have to be careful of where you place the cooker. It cook spill out and make a mess of your counter. You can solve that by putting some kind of towel or sheet underneath, or by place it over the sink, or something of that nature.

I've purchased this appliance two times! I am really the only person who loves rice in my family and this unit suits my requirements perfectly!

Very little rice is ruined in the end (if any at all) and it's great and speedy if you merely want to make 1 or two servings.

It makes a difference what variety of rice you make in relation to the quantity of water you employ. In my case I use only long grain rice and I usually use the more costly "basmati" rice that is a great deal healthier for you.

You can cook the sticky short grain rice but it makes a mess on the exterior of the appliance (gets it sticky) from the steam that leaves the unit during cooking. Other than that, it functions quite well.

Now my personal directions on how to prepare 1 SERVING: I utilize the rice scoop that comes with it. One scoop of dry rice (which is around 3/4 of a cup) rinse methodically, add 1-1/4 scoops of water (about 1 cup). If your microwave has a power level, adjust it to seven and cook it for 12 to 13 min. You may need to use trial and error with cooking times and power level for your style of microwave.

Hint: If your rice comes out too mushy, add more time (or lower the water content), if it comes out stuck together in one big lump .. reduce the cooking time, or add a little more water.

Remove it from the microwave, open the lid (Be careful! It gets awfully hot!), and include some butter (so much for the healthy part!) while fluffing the rice up and shut the lid for about 2 minutes.

That's all, around fifteen minutes and you have cooked rice!

How about the pasta-cooking functionality? There's no point making microwave pasta. Microwaved pasta doesn't work because pasta needs to move around in the water in order to prevent it from sticking.

Nevertheless, you are free to steam veggies of all types! You are able to steam even fish, shrimp, shellfish, and Chicken too.

Why don't you try steaming cut up potatoes in soup broth with some garlic added then mash them for a delicious dish.

I was incredibly ecstatic to discover this flamboyant looking stainless steel cube shaped design and was looking forward to getting rid of my last simple rice steamer in favor of this one until I realized some issues and decided to return it and stick to my tried and true big unit. First of all, any rice pot would be very hot at the end of a cooking cycle and I can envision difficult problems taking it out with oven mitts unless you want to carry the entire unit and still encounter troubles maintaining the steadiness of the cooking pot within for the purpose of scooping the rice out. Second of all, the steamer basket is practically too little for practical use with this size cooker and even though it fits nicely into the machine for storage there aren't any handles on the sides to help you lift it. You'd need to use 2 mitt-covered hands to take it out. Third, as nice as stainless-steel rice cooker appears, you are always cleaning up after fingerprints. Fourth I simply don't believe any non-stick pot can tolerate the dishwasher as they suggest to clean the cook pot. There are no non-stick products today that can tolerate that sort of abuse for very long. Rice that is finished cooking sticks badly even in a no stick pot and you normally have to soak prior to scrubbing by hand. Why bother with a dishwasher? Fifthly the retracting cord even if it's nice likely will not last in terms of its function. I've never seen retractable cord you can rely on.

One additional point. So far it has spilled over and gotten the counter wet every time I've used it! Before you mutter,"you are adding too much water", let me remind you I've never encountered this trouble with my trusty, if unsightly, previous rice cooker I picked up in Chinatown. Do I wish for a rice cooker for which I must modify the recipe in order to make it function properly? No, I don't.

I suppose I'll wait until I see a product that functions better and not just be taken in by appearance.

My previous rice cooker unit splashed liquid onto the counter and made messes. But this Sanyo 3-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized rice cooker is very clean, and nothing comes into contact with the counter at all. It cooks fantastic rice and warms it and keeps it ready to eat all day long. I have only 2 small complaints which are so minor that I still give the unit a 5-star rating:

1. The measurement unit is for cooked rice, not dry rice. You need to make use of the special measurment cup to count out the correct amount of rice. If you use 1 cup of raw rice but fill the water level to the one cup mark then the finished rice will be extremely dry. It is more logical to measure raw rice because that's what you're scooping in the measuring cup.

2. It is not possible to change the internal clock batter. The watch battery looks welded or bolted into the battery-holder. I guess that's fine. When the battery dies a few years from now it'll most likely be time to purchase a newer rice cooker anyhow.

I like this rice cooker a lot! The finished rice is so tasty that I often just cook white rice and eat it with nothing but just a bit of soy sauce.

It cooks rice to perfection, and warms quite well. The rice does get somewhat hardened after four or five hours of the warming feature, and after 8 hours it becomes too hard to enjoy eating. If this occurs, I just put in a bit of water and hit the cook button once more. It rehydrates the rice fast (far faster than needing to make the rice from scratch.
I make rice pretty much every day, and feel that the preparation time and quality is higher than most rice cookers. The interface is quite simple to manage, and does a lot to improve the functionality of the unit.

This is a good rice cooker in the $100 range and its warming function is quite good over a period of a few hours. If you frequently leave rice sitting after it finishes cooking, then you may want to find a unit with a longer-lasting keep-warm function.

I've always been let down by badly-performing rice cookers that break down quite quickly and was weary of spending too much on a more expensive one. To get around that I was cooking with pots for a little while and just recently found out about this stainless steel interior rice cooker on the Amazon website.

I truly appreciate this non-leach rice cooker. It shoots some steam around a bit but I use the steamer to cover the top which keeps the steam inside and protects the surround. The rice got stuck a bit on the bottom but from the 2nd time onward I switched off and take off the pot immediately when it started warming, which kept the sticking to a minimum. On top of that I make use of the steamer as a stand for the pot after cooking is finished. In general I am fond of the rice cooker and I hope it will last a long time. The main problem is that the warming function makes the rice stick. That's a common problem, but for this price I feel that should not have to be a problem.

I recently ditched all of my teflon pots and appliances for health reasons. The 1 thing I was missing the most was my old rice cooker. I shopped around and considered a number of products, including a microwave rice cooker, a clay pot rice cooker, and this one. After a few months I made a decision to buy the Miracle Exclusives Stainless Steel rice cooker and I'm very happy I did so. I make use of it often. I like brown rice and whole grains and this rice cooker does a good job with both of them. I've made veggies & fish with the steamer with success. I put some oil in the bowl before I use it and wash it right after I use it and there is no sticking problem at all. I make use of the steamer-insert even when only preparing rice or grains and haven't had any issue with overflowing.

Aside from the problem of sticking when you use the warmer after cooking is finished (a significant problem, depending on the way you time your cooking), this is a pretty good rice coker unit for the price.
